2022 Conference Recap

2022 has been a year of adjustments, adaptations, new trips, and return visits to places we love. As our suite of services for clients continues to grow alongside with the range of clients and communities that engage us, we’re very fortunate to have opportunities to share what we’re learning, seeing, and discovering around the country.

Our conference schedule over the last year has been an exceptionally busy one, and we wanted to take a moment to thank the many terrific organizations, professional associations, and networks that have invited us to be part of their work.

Eric Anderson, the leader of our Innovation & Commercialization practice area, attended the annual Association of University Research Parks (AURP) conference earlier this year in Long Beach, CA, while Alex Feldman, Shea O’Neill , and Omar Blaik attended and presented at the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU) Annual Conference in San Diego – an organization U3 Advisors is proud to sponsor.

Alex also presented to the Texas College and University Facilities Professionals (TCUF) in Austin, Texas about our ongoing work in downtown Fort Worth around the new Texas A&M University Fort Worth campus  and joined Jaime Flaherty and Karen Backus in attending and presenting to  the University Development and Innovation Council (UDIC) of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) at the Fall Meeting in Dallas. U3 Advisors has enjoyed a long partnership as one of the founding members of the UDIC.

Natalie Sutherland, leader of our Real Estate Analysis and Delivery practice area, participated in the P3 Higher Education Summit in Washington D.C. and Tatianna Swenda, who leads our Anchor Strategy practice area, presented to the International Economic Development Conference’s annual meeting in Oklahoma City – in partnership with the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia – about how to leverage the anchor institutions to drive greater economic impact.

Donald Taylor-Patterson, senior associate at U3 Advisors, joined the leaders at Reimagining the Civic Commons for a multi-day workshop series in Minneapolis that focused on the themes of community, public space, and inclusion. Reimagining the Civic Commons is a national initiative to transform shared civic assets to foster engagement, equity, environmental sustainability, and economic development in cities across the country. U3 Advisors has been honored to manage the initiative since 2016.

Last but by no means least, senior associate Stephany Lin was invited to join this year’s class of Next City Vanguard – the nation’s premiere professional development network for rising urban leaders.

We’re already making plans for 2023 – including at the Council for Independent College’s (CIC) Presidents Institute in January 2023. If you’d like to hear from us about best practices regarding the role of higher education and anchor institutions in economic and community development, the design of innovation districts, new kinds of public-private partnerships, how to create localized procurement and hiring strategies, or another one of our practice areas, please be in touch.
