George Smith is a Vice President at U3 Advisors. Since joining the firm in 2006, he has led a variety of advisory engagements, with a focus on real estate strategies, economic analyses, financial modeling, neighborhood initiatives, and local procurement efforts.
George currently manages U3A’s long-standing relationship with the University of Maryland, creating and implementing a downtown revitalization strategy for College Park. Other active projects include University of Detroit Mercy and Marygrove College’s anchor strategy in Northwest Detroit, and creating a joint housing and economic development plan for UMass Amherst and the Town of Amherst. George has previously served a variety of other institutional, civic, private, and philanthropic clients, delivering projects for University of Chicago (procurement), Cooper’s Ferry Partnership in Camden (anchor strategy), Case Western Reserve University (redevelopment plan), and Grand Rapids, MI (anchor strategy).
Subsequent to the merger with Karen Backus & Associates, George also was involved in U3 Ventures’ real estate development activities in Philadelphia, including serving as project manager of a redevelopment project to create a music venue, restaurant, and bar, and managing the design and entitlement project for a mixed-use tower in Center City.
Prior to U3 Advisors, George was a Consultant and Research Director for Collegia, Inc., a Boston-based firm focused on leveraging collaborative partnerships between higher education and civic entities to attract and retain college students. While with Collegia, George managed programs in Philadelphia, the Lehigh Valley, and Northeast Ohio, and created an index the measures a region’s relative success as a college destination.
George earned his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, and his Master of City Planning from the University of Pennsylvania. He currently resides in the Boston area.
